Curtis Jones has insisted he belongs in Liverpool's central midfield despite spending most of the second half of the season at right-back, saying he knows he is "good enough" to hold a permanent place in the engine room.

The 25-year-old has made 47 appearances this season and has been the first-choice right-back for the past month in the absence of specialist options, having also featured across central midfield, as a left-sided attacker and as an occasional number ten throughout the campaign.

"I'm not shy where I have to go and play. I want to be in centre midfield, and I know that I'm good enough and I 'should' be playing there, but it's all about the team and that's what you have to put first."

"Although I'm a full-back now at the minute, I'm playing inside as well, so I'm still getting a chance to get in the box and a chance to go and score and assist and things like that."

He was clear about how he defines himself, regardless of recent deployment.

"I wouldn't say that I'm a defender. I'm a full-back/centre-midfielder, you can say. I just enjoy playing. I'm a lad that any time I get a chance to have a ball at my feet, my eyes just light up."

Jones acknowledged the season has not lived up to his individual standards for goal contributions, with two goals and three assists in 47 appearances his lowest return since establishing himself in the first team.

"The stats there, I think they speak for themselves. There's been a number of times that I've been told that I stay on the ball a lot and things like that, but as everybody can see, I don't give the ball away at the same time. I think the important thing is to take that to the next step and try to score more and assist more."

On the season overall.

"It's been up and down and I think that's been the whole of the team. Although I would like to play in centre midfield and have that spot as mine, I've got to appreciate the lads around me and their abilities as well."

Jones faces a summer of uncertainty with just one year remaining on his contract and Aston Villa, Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur all linked. His preference, per multiple reports, is to stay at Liverpool if given assurances over his role. Friday's trip to Villa Park is a direct shootout for Champions League qualification, making his next performance the most important of his season.
