Former Arsenal FC striker Jeremie Aliadiere believes Desire Doue has the potential to become the best player in the world, but says the Paris Saint-Germain youngster must now back up last season’s breakthrough with consistency.

Speaking to Football Presse, Aliadiere reflected on Paris Saint-Germain’s dramatic improvement in the second half of last campaign, when Doue and Ousmane Dembele played key roles.

“I think it’s been an extraordinary second part of the season last year," he said. “They all clicked and started playing amazing football… and that’s what took them to the success they’ve had. But I do feel that Doue and Dembele were a huge part of this.”

However, Aliadiere believes both players have struggled to maintain that level this season.

“They had such a high… when the whole world [was] talking about them. They’re finding it hard now carrying on with that consistency of performance.”

He added that increased attention and distractions can have consequences.

“You’ve got so much going on that your main priority… maybe it’s only 80% anymore, and that’s when you do pick up injuries.”

Despite that, Aliadiere is convinced Doue’s ceiling remains unmatched. “I think he’s got the potential to be the best player in the world,” he said. “He is fearless… the way he manipulates the ball and takes players on.”

Referencing Lionel Messi, he added: “What makes him the greatest… is his decision-making.”

Longevity, he stressed, will ultimately define Doue’s career. “Can you perform one year, or can you perform 15, 20 years like Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?”

Aliadiere also pointed to the injury struggles that have affected Neymar, while admitting the pull of giants such as Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona could prove difficult to resist later in Doue’s career.
