Cristian Chivu’s side have started the season strongly, collecting 13 points from their opening five Serie A matches, but Inter are already looking ahead to potential changes within an ageing squad.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Hakan Calhanoglu are both approaching the final stages of their current contracts, increasing the importance of planning for the future in midfield.
According to Tuttosport, Anguissa has emerged as one of the players under consideration.
The 30-year-old Cameroon international is facing an uncertain future at Napoli, with negotiations over a new contract currently stalled. Inter have previously followed his situation and could consider making a move if he becomes available.
Mateo Kovacic is another name on the Nerazzurri’s radar. The former Inter midfielder is now 32 and has struggled for regular opportunities at Manchester City this season, making only two substitute appearances under Enzo Maresca according to the report.
Kovacic’s contract situation has also attracted attention, with Inter considering whether a return to Milan could make sense as part of their midfield restructuring.
Inter Milan have a history of recruiting experienced players when their contracts expire. Mkhitaryan and Calhanoglu both arrived at the club as free agents, demonstrating the appeal of that strategy to the Italian champions.
Anguissa would offer the physical presence Inter have been looking for in midfield, while Kovacic would provide familiarity with the club and extensive Serie A experience.
The club are also monitoring other potential free-transfer opportunities, including players who could eventually replace members of the current midfield group.
Any move for Anguissa would depend partly on his situation at Napoli, where renewal talks have failed to produce an agreement so far.
Inter would therefore have to wait before opening any formal negotiations, but the club’s interest reflects a broader strategy of identifying experienced players whose contractual situations could make them attainable without a transfer fee.
Whether Anguissa or Kovacic eventually become realistic targets remains to be seen, but both are now being considered as Inter plan for the next phase of their midfield.
