Hull City fought back to draw 2-2 with Everton as Joe Gelhardt and Mohamed Belloumi cancelled out goals from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Thierno Barry in an entertaining Premier League encounter at the MKM Stadium.

Gelhardt opened the scoring shortly after half-time, but Everton responded through Dewsbury-Hall and Barry to turn the game around. Substitute Belloumi then rescued a point for Hull, continuing his excellent form with another decisive contribution.

Everton thought they had taken the lead before the interval when Brennan Johnson scored, but VAR ruled out the goal for offside. The visitors were left frustrated again when their defensive errors allowed Hull to recover after going behind.

Gelhardt put the hosts ahead in the 48th minute, capitalising on a mistake by Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Everton's response was immediate, however, as Dewsbury-Hall equalised seven minutes later before Barry put the visitors in front in the 68th minute.

Belloumi, introduced from the bench after reporting fatigue following international duty, levelled the contest in the 74th minute to ensure Hull maintained their unbeaten home record since returning to the Premier League.

Everton manager David Moyes was disappointed with the overall standard of his side's performance and believed his team should have secured victory after taking the lead.

“I'm really frustrated with the levels generally. Our level was way below where we've been recently. Disappointed that when we went 2-1 up I didn't think there'd be any way we would go on to not to win the game. But a couple of defensive mistakes didn't help and we also missed quite a lot of chances ourselves which would've made it easier.”

Moyes also questioned the decision to disallow Johnson's goal, although he accepted that the initial shot might have involved an offside offence.

“I just don't know if the goalkeeper's heel is playing him on. I hope they've put the lines on and done it correctly.”

Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic praised his players' resilience, while acknowledging that defensive mistakes had made their task more difficult.

“I saw a good game, tough game. It was not easy. First half maybe we were scrappy on the ball with our transitions but we had what we had. Second ball when they made mistakes, we punished them immediately. But unfortunately after this we gave them two goals.

“It's big cardinal mistakes. But I can be happy with the boys because we showed good mentality. A point is good. Congratulations to both teams today. A great mentality, a strong mentality. We never surrendered.”

Jakirovic explained that Belloumi had not started because of fatigue and the travelling involved during the international break.

“He's also a very young guy and in the past he has had a few injuries. But he's a great player and he can make the difference.”

Moyes felt Everton had deserved to recover after their disappointing first-half display, but the late equaliser left him frustrated. Jakirovic, meanwhile, welcomed another point at home while stressing that Hull must turn competitive performances into more victories.
