The comments came in an interview with Der Spiegel released on the day of Bayern Munich's 3-0 DFB-Pokal final victory over VfB Stuttgart in Berlin.
"Today the chances of an extension are 60 to 40. There are still doubts," Hoeness said, before adding: "Anyone who knows me knows that. That's the situation, and in two to three months we'll see how things pan out."
Eberl, speaking to Sky Deutschland after the Cup final, said he found the timing surprising but gave no indication of planning to leave.
"I also found it very surprising. I want to do my job and prove myself through it. What we've achieved as a team this season is something to be proud of. People can have their doubts โ that's entirely legitimate. Then we'll talk about it."
When pressed on the reasons for Hoeness's reservations, Eberl replied: "I can't say, you'd have to ask Uli. I don't really care right now. We've had a very good season, winning the double. That's what counts."
Bild reported the internal criticisms in more specific terms. According to the newspaper, both Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge believe Eberl rushes transfer decisions, pushing to close deals too quickly at inflated prices. They also take issue with what they describe as a lack of communication โ Eberl is said to inform club leadership of his plans only when deals are nearly finalised, rather than involving them earlier in the process.
A third concern cited by Bild is temperamental. Eberl is reported to take internal criticism personally and cannot tolerate the kind of frank, sometimes confrontational debate that characterised earlier eras of Bayern management. Hoeness was blunt: "Karl-Heinz and I used to argue like broom bats. But when the door closed behind us, it was okay again. Max is quite sensitive about that."
Since taking charge in March 2024, Eberl has overseen the signings of Michael Olise, Luis Dรญaz, Jonathan Tah and Vincent Kompany, and secured extensions for Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich. Bayern won the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal this season. The final decision on his future will be made at the supervisory board meeting in August.
A double-winning season has not settled the question. That in itself is telling.
