Kai Havertz says Italy's continued absence from major tournaments troubles him, and that he has spoken to his Arsenal teammate Riccardo Calafiori about why one of European football's most storied nations keeps failing to qualify.

The Arsenal and Germany forward scored twice against Curaçao in Germany's opening World Cup group game and spoke to La Repubblica about the tournament, his career and his relationship with Italian football.

"Without Italy at a World Cup, something is missing," Havertz said. "I would have liked to see them here."

He said he and Calafiori have discussed Italy's qualifying failures directly.

"I don't know the answer, or I'd be revealing a secret," he said. "We've talked about it together. We're friends and I get on well with him on the pitch too. He's a very good player, like many Italians, so it can't be that."

Italy have now failed to qualify for three consecutive World Cups — 2018, 2022 and now the North American edition. It is an extraordinary run for a country that has won the tournament four times.

Asked about a possible move to Serie A — a natural question given his connection to Calafiori and the Italian press — Havertz was measured.

"At the moment this possibility does not present itself to me," he said.

The 27-year-old joined Arsenal in 2023 from Chelsea and has established himself as one of the Premier League's most effective forwards. He was part of the Arsenal side that reached the Champions League final this season before losing to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. He has made 192 senior appearances across Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Germany have already qualified for the last 16 after winning both of their opening group games. Havertz arrives at the tournament in strong form after a productive domestic season with Arsenal and will be hoping to carry that into a Germany side chasing their first World Cup since 2014.
