The Brighton midfielder has continued to build his reputation at international level after impressing during Sweden's 2026 World Cup campaign. His performance in the Nations League opener against Romania added another significant moment to his growing international career.
Ayari created Sweden's opening goal with a precise pass into the path of Isak, who finished the move to put the hosts ahead.
“He put it on a plate. It was fantastic,” Isak said of the assist.
Potter was equally impressed by the 22-year-old's overall contribution.
“I thought he was excellent with the ball. His passing and control in midfield were top,” Potter told TV4.
“How he read the game and understood the game. He won balls.”
The England-born manager continued to highlight the qualities he saw from Ayari throughout the match.
“I liked everything about his midfield play. Courage, courage. Courage to do what we asked him to do. His responsibility as well.”
Potter then went a step further, identifying the performance as the best Ayari has produced for Sweden.
“I think this was the best match Yasin has played for us. I think he was fantastic. It was really positive,” the Sweden boss said.
Brighton midfielder Ayari was one of Sweden's standout players as they defeated Romania 2-1, with the result giving Potter's side a winning start to their Nations League campaign.
His rise with the national team comes at an important stage of his club career. Ayari has established himself as an important member of Brighton's midfield after previously spending loan spells with Coventry City and Blackburn Rovers.
Brighton are also attempting to secure his future. His current contract is due to expire in June 2027, although the club hold an option to extend the agreement by another year.
Brighton intend to activate that option, which would keep Ayari at the club until 2028. The Seagulls are understood to regard him as an important part of their plans and do not want to risk losing him for nothing.
His form has also attracted attention elsewhere. Newcastle United have been linked with a move for the midfielder and could consider making an approach if negotiations over a new long-term agreement stall.
Ayari's situation therefore combines two developments: his increasing importance to Brighton and Sweden, and growing interest from clubs monitoring his contract position.
For now, however, his latest international performance has provided another indication of his development.
And Potter believes Ayari has just produced his strongest display yet in a Sweden shirt.
