Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini revealed he had to fight to keep Niccolò Pisilli at the club in January as the 21-year-old midfielder capped a dominant 4-0 win over Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico with the fourth goal on Monday night.

Goals from Gianluca Mancini, Wesley and Mario Hermoso had AS Roma 3-0 ahead at the interval, with Niccolo Pisilli heading home from a Donyell Malen assist after the break to seal a result that moves the Giallorossi to within one point of fourth-placed Juventus in the Serie A table, with three games remaining.

Speaking to DAZN after the final whistle, Gasperini was frank about how close Pisilli came to leaving in the winter window.

"Pisilli has always had important qualities. He is a very young player who did not have a defined role. I believe he has matured across every aspect of his game — physically, and especially tactically. He is a very reliable player, he can play in several positions. In December, the talk was that he should leave. Fortunately I managed to keep him, and from that point on he has very often been decisive."

The result keeps Roma's Champions League hopes alive in one of the most compressed top-four races Serie A has seen in years, with Milan and Juventus both within reach.

Gasperini was also asked about Paulo Dybala, who came on in the second half to add minutes to his legs after three months out with a meniscus injury.

"Unfortunately he has been out excessively, three months at a moment when he was in very good physical shape. He is not himself yet. Tonight he got some minutes. We hope that in these last few weeks we see the Dybala of before the injury. Then we will have more of a chance."

Pressed on whether Dybala has a future at Roma beyond this season, the coach declined to be drawn, instead framing the question around the squad's collective quality.

"These players deserve the best. Some people say this group is a fifth or sixth-place group. Put someone a bit stronger alongside them and they become something much higher. They have character, quality. They are a truly good group."

Roma's remaining fixtures are against Lazio, Napoli and Torino.
