Aston Villa had been searching for their first home Premier League win of the 2026-27 season, and the performance against one of Europe's leading sides offered a timely response after earlier defeats at Villa Park against Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Brentford.
Jackson put Villa ahead inside six minutes, taking advantage of a defensive mistake, before Erling Haaland equalised shortly after half-time. The hosts responded calmly, with Jackson scoring again in the 60th minute to restore their advantage and secure three points.
For Emery, the result was about more than ending the home winless run. He praised the atmosphere at Villa Park and the way his players matched the demands of facing Manchester City.
“A fantastic day to share with our supporters in Villa Park,” he said.
“We felt that this is our fortress, and the energy the supporters gave us was really fantastic. We played thinking about how we can get better, test ourselves against Manchester City after we were not winning at home in the Premier League.
“Today was a really fantastic day. We changed the day to day from the days we were not winning against Arsenal, Nottingham and Brentford, but today we must feel happy and enjoy the weekend.”
Villa's response after conceding was particularly important. Rather than allowing City's equaliser to unsettle them, they returned to their plan and found the decisive goal through Jackson, whose movement and finishing made the difference.
“We responded very well and kept calm after their goal,” Emery said.
“We continued in our game plan, scoring the goal we scored. It was fantastic because we were feeling good.
“Everything today was positive.”
The manager also presented the result as a benchmark for the standards Villa want to reach. Their unbeaten run had extended to seven matches, with four consecutive victories building momentum across competitions.
“We are going to rest because we focused on this match and Champions League strongly, working hard. This is the way and the standard we want to set in our ambition.
“Today we’re happy with three points against Manchester City, testing with them and the level they have. This is one of the best teams in the Premier League and in Europe and in the world.
“We want to be in this level, facing teams like Manchester City. It’s a very good example of how the players responded: this is the attitude, the way, the hard work.”
The victory was also a test of Villa's defensive commitment. City created pressure after Haaland's goal, but Villa held their shape and protected their lead, giving Jackson's second strike the importance it deserved.
Emery made sure to share the credit with the supporters and turn attention towards the next challenge.
“Thank you to the supporters, to everyone here for sharing in this moment in Villa Park. Let’s go for the next challenge on Wednesday in Bournemouth and Fulham here next Saturday.”
Villa's task now is to carry that intensity into the coming fixtures. Emery's message was clear: enjoy the result, but treat the performance as the level to reproduce rather than a one-off occasion.
