Frenkie de Jong has returned to Barcelona training, but the midfielder faces uncertainty over his place as Manchester City and Chelsea monitor his situation closely.

The Netherlands international has spent months recovering from a tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, an injury sustained during the 2026 World Cup. His return to group training represents progress, although Barcelona are determined not to rush him back into competitive action.

De Jong opted for conservative treatment rather than surgery. His recovery will now be followed carefully as he works towards regaining full fitness and match sharpness.

Head coach Hansi Flick has made clear that the midfielder will not be selected until he is fully recovered. That cautious approach comes at a time when Barcelona have several options in central midfield.

The arrival of Rodri and the development of Marc Bernal have added to the competition, while Pedri and Fermín López have also impressed. Dani Olmo, Gavi and Brian Fariñas provide further alternatives as Flick manages a demanding schedule.

De Jong therefore faces the challenge of proving his value in a midfield that has continued to perform well during his absence. Barcelona are expected to monitor his minutes and physical condition as the winter transfer window approaches.

His longer-term future has also attracted attention in England, says SPORT.

Manchester City explored the possibility of signing De Jong during the summer, making contact with Barcelona before deciding against pursuing a deal. Reports indicated that concerns about his knee injury influenced that decision, with City ultimately signing Enzo Fernández from Chelsea instead.

Chelsea are now monitoring De Jong's situation following Fernández's departure to the Etihad Stadium. Whether that interest develops into a formal approach remains unclear.

For Barcelona, the immediate priority is to bring De Jong back without risking a recurrence of his injury. His return could strengthen Flick's options, but the crowded midfield means he may have to compete hard for a regular role.

De Jong wants to remain at Barcelona, leaving the club with a decision to make as his recovery progresses and outside interest continues.
