Dante Bonfim Costa Santos is set to return to Bayern Munich as head coach of the club's under-23 side after retiring from playing at the end of this season, with the Brazilian widely reported as the leading candidate for the role.

The 42-year-old has spent the majority of his playing career in France, most recently as captain of OGC Nice in Ligue 1, and has long spoken openly about his desire to begin coaching at Bayern.

He obtained his UEFA Pro Licence while still an active professional.

Current Bayern II head coach Holger Seitz has confirmed he will step down at the end of the season to take a different role within the campus, creating the vacancy. Dante would also take charge of Bayern's representative side in the UEFA Youth League.

Dante played 133 games for Bayern between 2012 and 2015, winning the Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal treble in 2013 under Jupp Heynckes.

He has previously described that night at Wembley against Borussia Dortmund as the happiest day of his career.

No contract has been signed yet, as Dante remains focused on Nice's battle to avoid Ligue 1 relegation. A return to Munich is expected to be formalised in the summer.
