Thomas Tuchel’s side struggled to create a breakthrough during the opening stages, with Morgan Rogers hitting the post before the game changed in the 23rd minute. Pavel Sulc was initially shown a yellow card for a high challenge on Elliot Anderson, but the decision was upgraded to a red following a VAR review.
England could not take advantage before half-time, but Gordon broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart. Trent Alexander-Arnold, making his first England start in almost two years, delivered an excellent cross from the right and Gordon headed into the far corner.
Kane then doubled England’s advantage in the 69th minute, finishing to score his 87th international goal and put the result beyond doubt. England continued to create opportunities against the 10-man Czech Republic but could not add a third.
Tuchel was satisfied with the way his team responded after the break.
“We played a professional second half. We stepped up in urgency, bit of quicker play and better ball speed. We deserved to win the second half. With the red card we became heavy, heavy favourites. A clean sheet is always important, it gives everyone a good feeling. Always things to improve but overall a serious performance and a deserved win,” the England manager told BBC Radio 5 Live.
Tuchel also praised Alexander-Arnold, saying: “He did very well. He had an excellent assist. Overall like everyone [he] was professional, top attitude and one decisive action.”
England captain Kane described the result as a professional job rather than a spectacular performance.
“Job done, it was a professional performance. It wasn't the most exciting game of football but we did what we had to. Won the game, good clean sheet and we take it into the next one,” Kane said.
The striker explained that patience was required after Sulc’s dismissal.
“When a team who likes to defend get a man sent off it becomes every tougher. You have to be patient. Against 10 you have to move it quickly and as they tire the spaces will open up.”
Kane also praised Gordon, who has now scored in three successive England appearances.
“He's showing that he belongs at the highest level, for Barcelona and England. His performances in the last couple of games have been some of his best that he has played in an England shirt,” Kane said.
England now turn their attention to Croatia, with Tuchel confirming that the squad will remain in Prague for another night before travelling and preparing for Saturday’s match.
