Marc Cucurella has publicly called on Enzo Fernández to follow him from Chelsea to Real Madrid, speaking to Radio Marca just days after completing his own £51.8m move to the Bernabéu.

"He's a great player and a friend of mine," Cucurella said. "He congratulated me on the signing. I hope it happens. I would be very happy.

"We were very happy at Chelsea, and to have the opportunity to both sign for Real Madrid in the same summer. I hope he's lucky and becomes a Real Madrid player."

Jose Mourinho has made Fernández a priority midfield target after installing him at the top of his summer wish list. Despite reports claiming Madrid had officially opened club-to-club talks on Wednesday, Chelsea sources told the Daily Mail they had not yet been formally contacted by their Spanish counterparts and were simply anticipating an approach.

Chelsea have set a £120m asking price for the 25-year-old Argentina international, who contributed 10 goals and four assists in 35 Premier League appearances last season. Personal terms between Fernández and Madrid are not expected to be a significant obstacle should club-to-club talks advance.

Cucurella's comments are unlikely to be welcomed at Stamford Bridge, where the outgoing defender's public remarks risk inflaming the situation around a player incoming manager Xabi Alonso would prefer to keep. Alonso does not officially begin work until July 1.

Cucurella, who signed a six-year deal with Madrid, spent three years at Chelsea after joining from Brighton for £60m in 2022. He told Marca that Mourinho's personal approach was decisive.

"When a coach like Mourinho calls you, it makes you feel proud. He messaged me and then he called me. I'm excited to start working with him."

Whether Chelsea will hold the £120m line if Madrid open formal talks remains to be seen. The club made clear after Fernández's public comments about Madrid earlier in the season that their position on his value would not be influenced by any player-driven pressure.
