Coventry City are close to completing the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back Aurèle Amenda, with Bild reporting negotiations are virtually concluded and only details remain to be finalised before a deal worth €20m including bonuses is confirmed.

Amenda, 22, is a Switzerland World Cup defender who is understood to be in advanced personal negotiations with the Premier League newcomers. Manager Frank Lampard is a significant admirer of the player, and his enthusiasm for the signing has driven Coventry's pursuit.

Eintracht Frankfurt paid €9.5m to sign Amenda from BSC Young Boys in January 2024, meaning the club stand to make a substantial profit on a player who has developed significantly since his arrival in Germany. According to transfer expert Christopher Michel, a minimum of €20m would be required to convince Frankfurt to sell.

Amenda's departure is part of a significant defensive overhaul at Frankfurt, with the club also concluding deals for Rasmus Kristensen — who joins FC Midtjylland for €6m — and the sale of Nathaniel Brown to Bayern Munich for €55m. Hrvoje Smolcic is also set to leave for Corum FK for €1.5m.

For Coventry, signing a Switzerland international with top-flight European experience represents an ambitious and pointed statement of intent as they look to establish themselves in the Premier League under Lampard.

For a newly promoted side, the investment required to sign Amenda is significant, and it signals genuine ambition from Coventry about the level at which they intend to compete in the Premier League. Lampard's personal enthusiasm for the player — a factor highlighted in the German-language reports — adds credibility to the pursuit, since managers who actively want specific signings tend to make the strongest case for them to board members.

Frankfurt's position as a selling club with multiple outgoing deals in progress suggests they are content to manage a broader reset of the squad this summer, making Amenda's departure part of a planned defensive rebuild rather than an unwanted loss.
