Antonio Conte described Cesc Fàbregas as a born coach and a kindred spirit after Como held Napoli to a 0-0 draw at the Sinigaglia Stadium on Saturday.

It was a result that left Napoli nine points behind Inter in second place with three games remaining, while Como sit two points behind fourth-placed Juventus in the race for European football.

The match produced a brief but pointed moment of friction between the two managers after a disputed foul was awarded in Napoli's favour in the first half. Television footage clearly showed Conte exchanging heated words with Fàbregas, who was remonstrating with the fourth official.

The two men did not shake hands on the final whistle, but Conte used his post-match press conference to put the record straight and deliver a glowing tribute to his fellow manager.

"I like Cesc on the touchline — he is a hothead. Since I am also like that, he is someone similar to me. People who feel that passion. Passion for the work we do. You can see that Cesc studies the game. Football is in constant evolution.

"A few years ago there was one team attacking and the other waiting — today, no, you have to be a complete coach. He is a coach I have no difficulty in saying is a born winner. He is also a good manager alongside his directors, and his players reflect the characteristics of his football. I wish him the best."

The tribute carried extra weight given what Como have produced this season. Fàbregas, 39, has guided a newly promoted squad to the cusp of European football in their first top-flight campaign in over 20 years. Kevin De Bruyne has been one of the key figures, though he was managed carefully on Saturday given the accumulation of minutes. Belgian goalkeeper Tom Butez was another player Conte singled out.

"They have a goalkeeper who doesn't let you press — an incredible quality of finding the play between the lines and under pressure. Butez has grown enormously and is one of Como's most important weapons."

Conte was also satisfied with Napoli's result from a broader perspective. Champions League qualification — Napoli's primary objective since being eliminated from the European competition itself — is now mathematically confirmed, with the draw at Como enough to seal their place regardless of other results.

"Here at Como, who have ambitions to enter the Champions League and are just eight points behind — no one made calculations. It could have gone either way. Three games left. We want to secure the mathematics as quickly as possible. We have a Scudetto on our shirt — we must not forget that."

Fàbregas, speaking separately to DAZN after the final whistle, acknowledged Conte's comments with characteristic candour.

"If you don't evolve, you don't go anywhere."
