The defender, 23, had completed the match as Chelsea suffered a damaging home loss in which goalkeeper Mike Penders scored an own goal and Cole Palmer was sent off.
Footage published by the Daily Mail showed Colwill walking towards the West Stand as supporters began leaving the ground. He appeared to be trying to placate the home crowd and applauded the fans, but one supporter shouted: “Colwill don’t you f***ing clap. You can’t clap after that.”
Colwill then moved away along the touchline towards the tunnel, accompanied by substitute Danny Welbeck.
The exchange came at the end of a difficult evening for Chelsea, who struggled to recover after Penders’ own goal gave Tottenham the lead. Palmer’s dismissal soon afterwards left the hosts with a numerical disadvantage, and Mathys Tel scored a second for Spurs to seal the points.
The result was Chelsea’s third Premier League defeat of the season and added to the frustration surrounding a performance that left the home side unable to find a response. Colwill had played the full 90 minutes and was among the players still on the pitch as supporters began to leave.
The footage showed him approaching the West Stand, applauding and appearing to try to calm the reaction. The fan’s response was direct, criticising Colwill for applauding after the defeat. The defender did not remain at the stand, instead continuing down the touchline towards the tunnel with Welbeck beside him.
The brief exchange illustrated the tension among sections of the home support following a defeat to local rivals. The footage quickly drew attention because it captured the confrontation as supporters were still processing the result. Tottenham’s victory also marked a significant result away from home, while Chelsea were left to regroup after losing both the match and Palmer to a red card.
There was no indication in the footage that Colwill initiated an argument; the exchange appeared to develop after he approached supporters.
