Chelsea's academy prospects took centre stage as Xabi Alonso took charge of his first match since arriving at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues seeing off League Two Crawley Town 3-1 behind closed doors, Daily Mail Sport has learned.

Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emegha were the scorers for Chelsea, with those players involved essentially playing 45 minutes each. Pre-season training under Alonso began at Cobham on July 9, and Saturday's match against Crawley represented the new head coach's first game in charge, albeit an unofficial and private one.

Several academy players featured, with Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and Landon Emenalo starting the match for Alonso's side. Reggie Watson, Reggie Walsh, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, Calvin Diakite and Genesis Antwi were all introduced at half-time, while Dastan Satpayev, the 17-year-old signed from Kazakh side Kairat this summer, played the entire second half.

Emegha's goal is understood to be unofficially his first for Chelsea since arriving from BlueCo sister club Strasbourg on a pre-agreement. Gittens, 21, missed the second half of last season from January onwards because of a hamstring injury, while Delap, 23, will be hoping the outing marks the start of a more productive campaign after a difficult first year following his move from Ipswich Town.

Chelsea are still waiting for a number of first-team players to return from the World Cup and their subsequent time off, though Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro have both already been involved in training at Cobham. Neither Chelsea nor Crawley commented when approached about the match.

The Blues have another private friendly scheduled for Thursday against League One side Bromley, before flying out to Sydney to begin their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.

The travelling squad has not yet been finalised, with some players, including several from the academy, still weighing up potential loan moves. Chelsea's tour takes in fixtures against Western Sydney Wanderers on July 28, Tottenham on August 1, Juventus in Hong Kong on August 5, AC Milan in Jakarta on August 8, and Johor Darul Ta'zim in Malaysia on August 9.
