Chelsea face Real Madrid block in race for Como defender Ramón

Chelsea are pursuing Como centre-back Jacobo Ramón this summer but face a significant obstacle in the shape of a Real Madrid buy-back clause.

The Sun reported Chelsea's interest, confirming the club attempted to sign Ramón in January and intend to try again. They face competition from Arsenal, who also had scouts present at Como's 0-0 draw with Napoli, where the defender was outstanding.

Ramón joined Como from Real Madrid last summer for €2.5million in a deal structured like Nico Paz's — a permanent transfer but with several buy-back clauses staggered across the next two summers, rising from €8million to €10million before expiring entirely.

Madrid also retain a 50 per cent sell-on clause, meaning any external sale must be agreed with the Spanish club and half of any fee above cost price flows back to the Bernabéu.

He has been one of Como's most reliable performers this season, making 31 appearances under head coach Cesc Fàbregas as the club qualified for European football for the first time in their history. The parallel with Paz — who followed the same La Fábrica-to-Como path and is expected to be recalled by Real Madrid this summer via the buy-back clause — has made the question of Ramón's own future impossible to avoid.

Real Madrid were initially understood to be considering triggering the clause this summer. TEAMtalk subsequently reported the club told Como they would delay until next year at the earliest, leaving a window that Chelsea and Arsenal believe they can operate in — provided Real Madrid give permission to sell externally. Without that green light, neither club can move regardless of fee.

Como value Ramón at €45-50million for an unrestricted sale. At that price, with the 50 per cent sell-on clause in play, Real Madrid would receive a meaningful windfall even without reclaiming him. Whether that calculation proves more attractive than exercising the buyback themselves will determine whether Chelsea or Arsenal get their chance.
