Matteo Moretto has raised fresh doubts over the France international’s long-term future at the Spotify Camp Nou, suggesting that interest from the Premier League could develop when the transfer window reopens.
“Regarding Koundé’s future, there were already doubts at the beginning of the summer and there are still doubts. His future is a little up in the air,” Moretto said on La Pizarra.
Chelsea are among the clubs keeping track of the 27-year-old, having previously come close to signing him before his move to Barcelona.
“There are Premier League clubs monitoring his situation. Chelsea asked about him and almost signed him before he went to Barça,” Moretto explained.
The London club are understood to be examining whether a deal could be feasible in January, although there is no confirmation that a formal offer has been made.
“Going into January, they are sounding out the situation and looking at the numbers involved in a possible operation,” Moretto added.
Barcelona’s position could be influenced by their own plans for the transfer market. The club may need to raise funds if they decide to pursue a high-profile striker, with Moretto suggesting that a fee above €50 million could be required for Koundé.
“It remains to be seen whether Barça are looking for a way to raise money to sign a top striker,” he said.
Koundé has become an important part of Barcelona’s defence since arriving from Sevilla in 2022, but his role this season has reportedly been less prominent than in previous campaigns.
Any potential departure would depend on several factors, including Barcelona’s valuation, the level of interest from other clubs and the player’s own wishes.
Chelsea are not the only side reportedly monitoring the defender, with Bayern Munich also linked with a possible move. However, the immediate focus is on whether the Premier League club will turn its interest into a concrete approach when the January window opens.
For now, Koundé remains a Barcelona player, and the reports indicate interest rather than an agreed transfer.
