The Cameroon international put United ahead in the first half, only for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to equalise after the break. United showed greater organisation than in some recent performances, yet another match passed without the victory Michael Carrick urgently needs.
Mbeumo has scored four times in seven league appearances. Bruno Fernandes remains the only other United player to have scored more than once in the league this season, having netted a hat-trick against Ipswich in August.
The numbers underline how heavily United have depended on Mbeumo while other attacking players struggle to find consistency. His role has also changed repeatedly: he started on the right while Amad Diallo was injured, moved centrally after Amad returned, then operated on the left at Elland Road as Fernandes played further forward.
Carrick praised the forward’s willingness to adapt to the team’s needs.
“Bryan gives so much to the team,” the United head coach said. “He sacrifices so much.
“He's willing to do pretty much anything that needs to be done to benefit the team - whether that's defending in certain areas, whether that's attacking. He'll give everything he's got.
“He's getting in really good positions to be really dangerous for us, and it's great to have him.”
Manchester United’s problems extended beyond their attacking output. Carrick had to reshape his defence after Ayden Heaven was ruled out through illness, with Harry Maguire coming into the side, Leny Yoro moving to right-back and Diogo Dalot switching to the left.
Marcus Rashford was also left out of the starting line-up after carrying a minor issue. Carrick said the club were managing the forward’s condition, and Rashford remained on the bench without coming on.
Lisandro Martínez’s afternoon ended at half-time after he felt a problem with his thigh. Noussair Mazraoui replaced the Argentina international, returning from injury to slot in at centre-back. Carrick said further updates on the fitness concerns could follow before Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Como.
The draw also followed a turbulent week after Martínez criticised the club’s senior leadership over recruitment. The defender apologised for the timing and forum of his comments, and Carrick said the squad had moved on.
Carrick described the Leeds performance as a possible fresh start, while stressing that he was not pretending United’s situation was satisfactory. The challenge now is to turn improved application into wins, with Mbeumo’s contribution offering encouragement but little margin for complacency.
