Bruno Guimarães admitted he was desperate to make an impact at the Emirates Stadium after coming off the bench to score Arsenal’s winner against Leeds United.

The Brazilian midfielder had missed Arsenal’s first two home matches of the season and was determined to seize his opportunity when Mikel Arteta introduced him after Riccardo Calafiori’s equaliser. Guimarães needed only a few minutes to make his mark, firing home in the 70th minute to complete a 2-1 comeback victory.

“It’s my first official game at the Emirates; I didn't play against Coventry and for Chelsea I was coming back from injury. I couldn't wait to go to the pitch today, and I was very anxious on the bench,” he said.

“So, getting in the game, scoring an important goal and getting the three points is always a very good feeling. I would say it was a very special day for me.”

The goal also helped Arsenal respond to their disappointing defeat by Brighton before the international break. Guimarães felt the performance represented a step forward, although he believes the team still has room to improve.

“I think after the last game against Brighton we know that we should do much better, and today, I think it was a great answer even if I believe we can do much more,” he said. “But the three points was very good for us. We know how tight the Premier League is, so we're very happy with the win.”

Arsenal’s winner came at the end of an incisive move involving Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice. Rice’s clever flick released Guimarães, who finished from outside the penalty area.

The midfielder credited Arteta’s instructions to keep moving and disrupt opponents’ defensive organisation.

“Mikel always tells us to never stay in the same position and always try to disorganise the other team. I think we did that very well,” he explained.

“When Dec set the pass for me, the first thing in my mind was: ‘I can't miss this, I can't miss this, I have to score!’ It was a great finish, a great goal and a great moment for everyone.”

Guimarães celebrated by jumping into the home crowd, saying he wanted to show his appreciation for the supporters who had welcomed him since his move from Newcastle United.

“I want to hug them for everything they have been doing for me. I can feel their love,” he said.

The midfielder now hopes to build on his first home appearance as Arsenal prepare for Champions League football at the Emirates against Lille.
