Bologna plot midfield double raid with Ipswich kid on radar

Bologna are preparing to enter the transfer market in earnest following the return of the club's leadership from a visit to owner Joey Saputo in Canada, with midfield reinforcement the top priority.

However, the outcome of the Jhon Lucumi situation will shape the scale and direction of their summer business.

Lucumi's potential departure is the most significant variable hanging over Bologna's planning.

The Colombian centre-back has attracted serious interest from Juventus and a cluster of Premier League clubs, and his performances for Colombia at the World Cup β€” where he impressed in the opening group stage win over Uzbekistan β€” have only intensified that attention.

Bologna's new head coach Domenico Tedesco, who takes over after the club's historic Champions League qualification, needs midfield depth after a series of departures.

Roberto Freuler is not expected to renew his contract. Remo Sohm will also not be staying, having been on loan from Wolfsburg. That leaves Pobega, Moro and Ferguson as the midfield core, a group the club regards as insufficient for two fronts next season.

The two preferred targets are Fabio Miretti and Peer Koopmeiners. Miretti, 22, is a Juventus midfielder who has been inserted into the ongoing discussions between the two clubs over a potential Lucumi transfer. Juventus value him at €12-15 million. Koopmeiners β€” the younger brother of Teun, Juventus's Dutch midfielder β€” plays for AZ Alkmaar and is also valued in a similar range, with AZ having signalled flexibility from an earlier €20 million position.

Belgian international Orel Mangala has also emerged as a candidate, and is pushing actively for a move. Mangala, who worked closely with Tedesco during the Belgian national team's recent campaign, is keen to reunite with the coach and is making himself available on a loan deal with a purchase option of around €7 million. The obstacle is fitness: Mangala spent most of last season injured at Lyon, and Bologna's board intends to conduct a thorough medical assessment before committing to any deal.

A further name has entered the picture. Jaden Philogene-Bidace, 24, a left-footed winger at Ipswich Town who has been compared to Eberechi Rowe for his directness and eye for goal, has been identified as a potential wide option. The interest is at an early stage.

Bologna are also keeping open the possibility of extending JoΓ£o MΓ‘rio's loan from Juventus for a further season, which would add depth without addressing the specialist positions Tedesco most urgently needs to fill.
