Bologna have agreed terms with Matteo Darmian on a deal through June 2027, with an option that could keep the veteran defender at the club until 2028.

The former Inter player has been without a club since his Nerazzurri contract expired at the end of June, but his search for a new challenge is now set to end with a return to Serie A.

Tuttomercatoweb reports that Bologna have reached an agreement with Darmian’s representatives. The deal gives the club an experienced option capable of operating on the flank or in a back three.

Darmian had been training with Bologna while the club assessed his physical condition before making a final decision. The move became more urgent after Emil Holm suffered a serious injury that is expected to keep him out for several months.

The Italian defender brings considerable experience to a Bologna squad managed by Raffaele Palladino. He spent the previous three seasons at Inter, where he won three Serie A titles and three Coppa Italia trophies.

His career has also included spells with AC Milan, Palermo, Torino, Manchester United and Parma. At United, he won the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup before returning to Italy.

Bologna had considered several alternatives while Darmian’s fitness was being assessed. Elseid Hysaj, Pol Lirola and Mitchel Bakker were among the other defenders under consideration.

Tuttomercatoweb had previously reported that Hysaj was the leading alternative if the Darmian deal failed to materialise. The Albania international is also a free agent after leaving Lazio.

Darmian’s versatility ultimately made him an attractive solution. He can operate as a wing-back, full-back or in a three-man defence, giving Palladino another experienced player capable of covering different roles.

The agreement comes after several days in which Bologna deliberately took its time over the veteran. Darmian had been training at Casteldebole after undergoing his medical checks, with the club wanting to see how quickly he could regain match sharpness.

His last competitive appearance for Inter came in May against Verona, before his contract expired on June 30.

Bologna’s decision reflects the value of adding experience at a time when the defensive group has been disrupted. Holm’s injury left the club needing another option, while Darmian’s ability to cover several positions gives Palladino additional flexibility.

For the defender, the move represents a chance to remain in Serie A after an extensive career at the highest level in Italy and England.
