Bayern say Musiala's condition was known before recent collapses

Bayern Munich officials have responded calmly to Jamal Musiala's recent on-field collapses, saying the neurological issue behind them was already known internally.

The incidents, which occurred during pre-season friendlies against RB Leipzig and 1. FC Heidenheim, reportedly left club honorary president Uli Hoeness badly shaken, but Bayern Munich say nobody among the players or staff was caught by surprise.

The condition had already been identified and treated internally last season, with Musiala himself later confirming on social media that he had been diagnosed with brief, treatable absence seizures caused by a neurological dysfunction.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Saturday's German Supercup match against Borussia Dortmund, sporting director Max Eberl explained that a recent change to Musiala's treatment plan was behind the recent episodes, and that doctors are now reversing that adjustment.

"After that, everything will be as it was before," Eberl said. "Then the risk is minimised again. We've been dealing with this for a while, he played the second half of last season with it, he's on a good path.

"We've had the support in place for this issue for a long time."

Head coach Vincent Kompany, for his part, has tried to steer attention away from the diagnosis and back toward Musiala's form, which he rates as being as sharp as it was before the serious ankle injury that disrupted the midfielder's 2025 Club World Cup.

"We saw a Jamal who hadn't been on the pitch for a long time," Kompany said. "I'm looking forward to the counter-attack from Jamal that will come at some point.

"In the bigger picture, he made huge progress over the summer. He was a level above our best players," the Belgian added, referring to Musiala's brief cameos in Bayern's two pre-season friendlies.

Musiala had a metal plate removed from his foot over the summer, and has reportedly returned to something closer to his best form in training since. He will not be involved in Saturday's Supercup match against Dortmund, but a return to the squad is understood to be close, with the German international currently being managed carefully as he looks to make his mark again on the pitch.
