According to the Bild Bayern Insider podcast, "very concrete talks" took place over a switch for the French right-back in the closing stages of the window, with Everton the club furthest down the road towards signing him.
In the end, the Merseyside club opted for Maitland-Niles instead, signing the 29-year-old from Lyon for €3.5m. Fulham had also shown interest in Boey, but that too failed to produce a move, leaving the 25-year-old to stay put at Bayern Munich for now.
Boey's contract at the Allianz Arena runs until 2028, and further options could yet emerge given the transfer window remains open in several countries — new registrations are permitted in Turkey until this evening, in Switzerland until 8 September, and in Saudi Arabia until mid-October.
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund, however, sounded increasingly confident that Boey would simply see out the situation in Munich.
"The probability is now higher that he'll stay here," Freund said on Friday morning. "He's always behaved impeccably. It was a different plan, but that's how it is in football. If all the markets close and he stays, he'll remain a player in our squad."
Boey joined Bayern from Galatasaray in January 2024 for around €30m but has never fully established himself in Munich, with injuries and shifting competition for places limiting his opportunities throughout his time at the club. He has made 38 competitive appearances in total, including a loan spell back at Galatasaray, and head coach Vincent Kompany's rotation options at right-back have left him fighting for minutes even when fit.
The Frenchman has featured in all four of Bayern's competitive fixtures so far this season, though only as a substitute outside of the club's DFB-Pokal first-round win over SV Wehen Wiesbaden.
With Alphonso Davies, Josip Stanišić and Konrad Laimer all capable of covering multiple defensive positions, Boey's route to regular minutes remains far from straightforward regardless of whether he ultimately stays beyond this window. For now, though, Bayern appear resigned to keeping him, with Freund's comments suggesting the club has made peace with a scenario it had not originally planned for.
