The 19-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge after establishing himself as one of the most exciting young players in Brazilian football with Palmeiras.
His second season in England, however, has started slowly. Estevao has made only 23 minutes of Premier League football across Chelsea's opening five matches, with his two starts coming in the EFL Cup.
That limited involvement is reportedly beginning to cause frustration, particularly because Estevao had expected to play a more significant role after his first season in England.
According to SPORT, there have also been sporting disagreements between the player and Alonso, particularly over his positioning.
Estevao is understood to want to gradually operate more centrally, while Cole Palmer currently occupies the key attacking role in that area.
Barcelona are monitoring the situation because the Brazilian's profile remains highly regarded in Catalonia.
However, there is no indication at present that Estevao or his representatives are actively seeking a departure from Chelsea.
The player himself avoided creating controversy when asked about his limited involvement during the latest Brazil international camp.
“Every coach has their way of playing and, of course, I work every day and give my best. That's what I do,” Estevao said.
The teenager also stressed that competition for places at Chelsea is intense.
“We have a lot of very high-quality players at Chelsea. I focus on what I can control,” he explained.
“When I get an opportunity, I try to give my best. I think I have taken all the opportunities I have had very well.”
Estevao added: “I try to control what is in my hands and leave tomorrow in God's hands. I also have a lot of confidence in myself.”
His comments suggest that, despite the lack of regular Premier League football, the Brazilian is not publicly questioning Alonso's decisions.
For Chelsea, the immediate challenge is finding the right role for a player they invested heavily in and regard as a major part of their long-term project.
For Estevao, meanwhile, the next stage of his development will depend on converting the opportunities that do arrive into performances that make regular selection increasingly difficult to overlook.
Barcelona's reported interest adds another layer to the situation, although a transfer does not currently appear to be on the player's agenda.
