Barcelona will be without Xavi Espart for around seven weeks after tests confirmed a right ankle syndesmosis injury suffered in Sunday’s Clásico against Real Madrid.

The club announced the expected recovery period on Monday, a day after the 19-year-old was forced off during the 2-1 El Clásico defeat to Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou.

Espart suffered the injury following contact with Aurélien Tchouaméni and was unable to continue beyond the first half-hour.

Espart had started the match despite having experienced ankle discomfort after Barcelona’s Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain. He attempted to play through the problem against Madrid but eventually signalled to the bench that he needed to come off. Alejandro Balde replaced him.

The injury is a significant interruption for a young defender who had become a regular in Hansi Flick’s side. Espart had featured in nine matches across LaLiga and the Champions League this season, playing at both left-back and right-back. He had also contributed two goals and two assists.

Barcelona confirmed the diagnosis in a medical statement, estimating that Espart would be sidelined for approximately seven weeks. That timetable would take him out of a substantial run of domestic and European fixtures, although his precise return will depend on his recovery.

His absence comes amid wider concerns about the club’s defensive depth. Jules Koundé, Andreas Christensen and Eric García have also had fitness problems, leaving Flick with limited options across the back line. The club will be hoping to recover some of those players while Espart begins his rehabilitation.

Balde is one of the immediate options to cover at full-back after coming on against Madrid. João Cancelo can also offer cover on either flank, giving Flick alternatives while he waits for injured players to return.

The setback is particularly frustrating for Espart given the progress he had made during the opening months of the season. His ability to operate on both sides of defence had made him a useful option, while his attacking contribution had added another dimension to his game.

Barcelona have not announced a fixed return date beyond the approximate seven-week estimate. Espart now faces a spell away from first-team action at a demanding point in the campaign.
