Barcelona have added Chelsea striker João Pedro to their summer transfer shortlist as they prepare to invest heavily in a new centre-forward to succeed Robert Lewandowski.

The Brazilian, 24, only joined Chelsea from Brighton last season but has made an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge, scoring 22 goals and contributing nine assists across 49 appearances in all competitions this term.

According to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, João Pedro is being considered alongside Atletico Madrid's Julián Álvarez and Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martínez as Barcelona weigh up their options in attack. Álvarez is understood to be the first choice, but João Pedro represents a credible alternative if that move proves unworkable.

Barcelona are prepared to spend up to £85 million to land their primary target this summer, a significant outlay that reflects the urgency of reinforcing a position that has been central to their thinking since Lewandowski's time at the club began winding down.

Chelsea would demand a premium on the £55 million plus add-ons they paid Brighton for João Pedro, making any deal a substantial commitment for the Catalan club. The forward is also in line to feature for Brazil at this summer's World Cup under coach Carlo Ancelotti, which could further raise his profile and price.

Álvarez joined Atlético from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal worth more than £65 million, and any move for the Argentine would require Barcelona to negotiate with a direct domestic rival.
