CD Oliver confirmed the agreement on their social media channels, announcing that the deal was the product of an ongoing relationship between the two clubs and a period of scouting stretching back more than a year.
"FC Barcelona and CD Oliver, thanks to the strong relationship between both clubs, have reached an agreement for the signing of Mateo Junza. After a first year in eleven-a-side football and a long and exhaustive period of monitoring, Barcelona have decided to sign Mateo Junza."
Junza, born in 2015, joined CD Oliver at the age of four and has spent seven seasons at the Zaragoza club. Despite being an Alevín first-year player — the youngest age bracket eligible for eleven-a-side football — he was promoted to play with the Alevín Preferente side this season, competing a year above his natural level.
He was also selected for the Aragon regional Under-12 squad for the Spanish Regional Championships, representing his region against players born a year earlier — a measure of the gap in maturity and ability his coaches identified.
At club level, Junza was the second-highest scorer as CD Oliver won their first ever Benjamín Preferente title. CD Oliver described him as possessing "a special and unique talent."
Spanish media have drawn comparisons with Barcelona first-team midfielder Fermín López — a player who followed a similar path through La Masia from a young age — citing Junza's attacking midfield position, small frame and ability to arrive late into goalscoring positions.
Villarreal, with whom CD Oliver have an existing collaboration agreement, were also competing for his signature. Real Madrid's interest only added urgency to Barcelona's move.
He will begin at La Masia next season as an Infantil second-year player.
Barcelona's youth recruitment operation rarely reaches outside Catalonia for players this young. That they did so here — and won the race — says something about what their scouts believe they have found in a boy who has spent seven years perfecting his craft in Zaragoza.
