Atlético Madrid have opened formal talks via intermediaries with Wolverhampton Wanderers over a summer move for João Gomes, with the pursuit of primary midfield target Ederson from Atalanta running into significant obstacles.

Wolves were relegated from the Premier League earlier this week. Gomes, 25, has made over 120 appearances for the club since joining from Flamengo in January 2023 for around £15 million.

Wolves value him at £40 million, a figure intermediaries believe is achievable, and the club are eager to sell higher earners rather than take them into the Championship.

Atlético agreed personal terms with Ederson weeks ago but cannot reach a club-to-club agreement with Atalanta, who are holding out for close to €50 million. Agent fees are also unresolved.

With the Ederson deal stalled, Diego Simeone's side are now pursuing Gomes as a concrete alternative to fill the midfield void left by the sale of Conor Gallagher to Tottenham Hotspur in January.

Gomes is understood to be open to a move to LaLiga, reports talkSPORT. He has been one of Wolves' standout performers in a dire season, ranking among the Premier League's leaders for tackles per game.

Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Napoli are also monitoring his situation, and Premier League interest remains active. Gomes is not expected to want to play in the Championship, and his contract runs until 2027, giving Wolves limited leverage as the summer approaches.
