Real Madrid's transfer activity this summer has been aggressive: the club are closing in on a deal worth more than €100 million for Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig, while also holding direct contact with Manchester City over a move for World Cup Golden Ball winner Rodri, according to Spanish media reports.
That spending has not gone unnoticed in England, where Arsenal had reportedly kept funds in reserve after being outbid by Chelsea for Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers, whose deal was worth around £117m (roughly €138m), a fee that made Rogers the most expensive British player in history. With money still available, Mikel Arteta's side had been ready to test Real Madrid's resolve with a big-money offer for Vinícius.
That scenario now appears to have cooled. Vinícius's contract renewal has dragged on for two summers, with his salary demands, close to €30 million per season, having stalled talks with the Bernabéu hierarchy, who have offered closer to €20 million.
But sources close to Arsenal say the club now regards a Vinícius renewal as the likely outcome, with one line repeated from within the Emirates Stadium when asked about a possible bid: "He's going to renew."
Arsenal are understood to have effectively abandoned their pursuit, though they will continue monitoring the situation.
Sources in England also note that Vinícius himself has given no public sign of wanting to leave, a contrast with the approach taken by Julián Álvarez, who publicly requested to leave Atlético Madrid during the World Cup. There has been no comparable gesture from the Brazilian, no complaint and no message on social media hinting at a departure.
With Vinícius seemingly off the table, Arsenal and sporting director Andrea Berta are expected to pursue an alternative wide forward this summer. Gabriel Martinelli's future remains unresolved internally amid uncertainty over his role in Arteta's plans, while a move for Bradley Barcola, also being tracked by Liverpool, remains under consideration as Arsenal look to add further attacking depth before the window closes.
