Mbappé's comments earlier in the week, in which the French forward expressed dissatisfaction at his lack of playing time, had generated significant headlines. Arbeloa moved quickly to defuse the situation.
"I just saw him and told him to stay calm. What he said is something I had already spoken with him about. I give it a sense of normality. I know what it is to play every day and not to play. I understand them. I know he wasn't happy and I like that. I wouldn't understand it if Kylian didn't want to play. It's normal to me."
He was unconcerned that a private conversation had entered the public domain.
"It hasn't hurt me. When I talk privately with players I like it to stay private, but it doesn't bother me that it gets commented on. I spoke with him before the game and what I told you then — no problem."
Asked whether his tenure had ended with his reputation strengthened or damaged, Arbeloa's response was composed and notably free of regret.
"I arrived here four months ago as a Primera RFEF coach and when I leave, I leave as a Real Madrid coach. A top-flight head coach, having managed Champions League matches. I don't think many coaches can say the same. For me, these four months have been a huge experience, enormous learning both personally and professionally. Defending this badge and being here in front of you every day has also been great growth, a masterclass. When this ends, I believe I will leave with a clear conscience."
Arbeloa was also asked about the prospect of José Mourinho returning to the club, with the Portuguese currently weighing up his future after Benfica's season ended. He was warm and clear in his assessment.
"As a Madrid supporter, I feel he is the number one. I said the same in the Champions League. I thought it a month ago and I will keep thinking it. He will always be 'uno di noi'. If he comes back, I will be very happy that he is home."
Madrid travel to Sevilla on Sunday with their La Liga season effectively concluded in terms of silverware, having already been eliminated from Europe. The club are expected to confirm their next permanent manager in the coming days.
