Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has defended Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni ahead of Sunday's El Clásico at Camp Nou, insisting both players deserve the opportunity to keep fighting for the club.

Arbeloa faced the media on Saturday ahead of a match in which Barcelona need only a point to be crowned La Liga champions, with Real having been fined both players €500,000 each following a physical confrontation at Valdebebas training ground on Thursday.

He opened his address to reporters with a two-part statement.

"I have two things to say. First, I am very proud of the decisiveness, speed and transparency with which the club has acted. And second, the players have acknowledged their mistake, expressed their regret, accepted the consequences and apologised. That is enough for me."

He then went further, placing the incident in the context of two seasons without a trophy and shielding both players from further public criticism.

"Fede Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni are two players who perfectly represent what Real Madrid stands for. They are European champions with this club — something not every player who has passed through here can say. They deserve for us to turn the page and give them an opportunity to keep fighting for this club. I am very proud of them."

He was direct when asked whether the dressing room was in crisis.

"I will not allow all of this to be used to question the professionalism of my players. It is a lie that they are not professional. It is a lie that they have disrespected me. It is absolutely false that any of them are not playing because of issues with me or because their lifestyle does not align with what is expected of a Real Madrid player. I will not allow that."

He accepted the broader responsibility.

"If you want to point the finger at someone, here I am. I am responsible for everything that happens at Real Madrid. For me, the most serious thing, and what hurts me the most, is that what happens in the Real Madrid dressing room should stay in the Real Madrid dressing room."

On the Clásico itself, Arbeloa called on his players to redirect their frustrations constructively.

"It is clear that frustration and anger can lead to situations we do not want, but we have to channel that frustration and anger into playing a great game tomorrow. That is where we need to focus our energy."

Tchouaméni will travel with the squad and is available for selection. Valverde is ruled out for between 10 and 14 days with cranioencephalic trauma. Arbeloa also confirmed that Mbappé will be assessed before the game after the French forward was involved in a further incident — a verbal altercation with a member of the coaching staff acting as assistant referee during a training match.

A point for Barcelona at Camp Nou ends Real Madrid's La Liga hopes with three games remaining.
