The Chelsea manager confirmed that Caicedo is available after working his way back from injury, while Reece James, João Pedro, Cole Palmer and Marco Palestra have also trained ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match at Stamford Bridge.
“We have used the time with Moisés to get him back fit,” Alonso said. “He’s been training good and he’s okay to go.”
Alonso believes the extended break has helped the squad recover. He expects the returning players to make a difference during five league matches before the next international window.
Jamie Gittens, however, will be absent after picking up an ankle injury while away with England Under-21s. Alonso expects the winger to be out for a few weeks. That leaves him with more options elsewhere in attack.
The manager was also asked about Manchester City’s financial case after an independent commission found the club guilty of most charges brought by the Premier League. City have appealed, and Alonso said the process must run its course.
“We need to wait until the panel announces the actions and we will see what happens,” he said. “We need to respect that independence from the judicial panel.”
Alonso declined to speculate on sanctions, stressing that the decision was not in Chelsea’s hands. He said the players had not discussed the issue and must focus on their own performances.
Chelsea head into the Bournemouth fixture after a winless three-match league run, including a 3-0 defeat by Brentford. Alonso acknowledged that the team’s start had not been good enough and said improvement would take time.
“We need to keep improving, to keep learning,” he said, adding that the team must learn from mistakes rather than repeat them.
Alonso also defended his handling of Palmer’s fitness after England manager Thomas Tuchel questioned the number of matches the forward has missed internationally. Palmer has trained during the past week, but Chelsea did not want to rush him back before he was ready.
“The most important thing for Cole is to be fully fit, that he enjoys his game,” Alonso said. He added that both club and country need Palmer at his best.
Bournemouth’s high tempo and clear playing style make them difficult to contain. Alonso said Chelsea must deliver a strong home performance and turn their preparations into a much-needed win.
