Xabi Alonso believes Romeo Lavia is becoming an increasingly important figure in Chelsea’s midfield, but insists the Belgian still has another level to reach.

Lavia has completed 90 minutes in each of Chelsea’s last two matches, against Liverpool and Manchester United, producing performances that have strengthened his position as a key component of Alonso’s side.

The midfielder’s growing consistency has been particularly encouraging after previous injury problems disrupted his progress at Stamford Bridge. Alonso believes the improvement is helping Chelsea function more effectively, with Lavia providing control, balance and an important link between his team-mates.

“I always have the feeling that every time the midfield area works, the team works better,” the Chelsea head coach said.

“Romeo is in a very good place, not just the last game. I think that for the last month he's been very consistent in his performance.

“He's been very important for the team because in the middle you need to have a brain for yourself, but a brain for the team. He's good with the ball, he's giving balance, and he's connecting really well with the players around him.

“It's not rocket science to know that once you have good midfielders, the team normally looks better.”

Lavia’s ability to influence matches from the centre of the pitch has been a significant positive for Alonso, who wants his side to establish greater control through midfield. The 22-year-old’s contribution is not simply about retaining possession, but also recognising when to move the ball, providing cover and helping those around him find their positions.

However, the manager is determined that the recent improvement should represent a starting point rather than the limit of what Lavia can achieve.

“We need to push him. We need to help him continue so he can take the next step, because it’s not enough yet,” Alonso said.

Asked whether the midfielder had changed anything in his approach, the Spaniard suggested that Lavia himself understood what was required to make the progress expected of him.

“There's been a change, and he knows that,” Alonso added. “He has realised that's the way.”

For Chelsea, having Lavia available and completing full matches is an important development. Alonso has seen the midfielder become more consistent over recent weeks, but his message is clear: the Belgian has earned greater responsibility through his performances, and must now build on that progress.
