Max Allegri has accepted personal responsibility for AC Milan's failure to qualify for the Champions League, after a 2-1 home defeat by Cagliari on the final day of the season ended the club's top-four ambitions in the most damaging way possible.

AC Milan had entered the match in third place, knowing a home win against a Cagliari side with nothing to play for would be enough. Alexis Saelemaekers settled nerves by scoring in the second minute. What followed was one of the club's worst home performances of the season.

Gennaro Borrelli equalised for Cagliari in the 20th minute, pouncing to sweep home after Yerry Mina's downward header from a corner. Juan Rodríguez then turned the tie around midway through the second half, reacting quickest to a deflection.

The final result left Milan fifth, overtaken by both AS Roma and Como on a night when the two sides qualified for the Champions League at Milan and Juventus's expense.

Allegri was direct at his press conference.

"Unfortunately, we cannot change the result now. When we lose five home games the way we did, we end up in this position. I don't know what the reason is. We made mistakes. I made mistakes too. Certainly, I should have found the solution myself — I am the one responsible."

On whether he was considering his future: "I don't know about the future. Right now my thought only goes to the lack of results. Naturally, the whole year must be evaluated. Mistakes were made, but there is no point talking about it now."

Allegri was appointed in the summer of 2025 with a clear mandate to return Milan to Europe's top competition. He finishes fifth. Roma and Como will play in the Champions League next season instead.
