Athletic Bilbao centre-back Yeray Álvarez has revealed that the club's dressing room has received positive reports about incoming head coach Edin Terzic and is looking forward to working with the German.

The veteran also paid a heartfelt tribute to Ernesto Valverde, whose final season in charge he described as one he cannot adequately thank.

Yeray spoke at Athletic Club's Lezama training ground on Wednesday after signing a contract extension until June 2028, with an option to extend for a further season — a renewal that moves him significantly closer to what he described as his dream of finishing his entire career at Athletic.

"They have spoken well to us about his routines and way of playing. We think it will suit Athletic well. He will be a demanding coach, and here he has a hell of a team to work with and demand from us. We will receive him with open arms."

Yeray did not name the source of that information, but the warmth of his words suggested the dressing room's reception for Terzic will be positive.

He was equally generous toward Valverde, whose reign of seven seasons ends this summer having delivered the Copa del Rey in 2024 and established Athletic as a consistent European competitor.

"Valverde was the one who gave me my debut. I had him for seven seasons as my coach. I can only thank him. Everything I have is gratitude toward him. The objective is clear: to try and win what remains, starting this Sunday against Valencia."

The 31-year-old Barakaldo-born defender has endured one of the most difficult personal years of a career already marked by testicular cancer and repeated injuries. In September 2025 he received a 10-month UEFA suspension after testing positive for a substance found in his partner's hair-loss medication — a violation UEFA accepted was entirely unintentional.

He returned to competitive action on 2 April and has spoken at length about the work he did to maintain his physical condition during the ban.

"It hasn't been easy. But with their work I've been able to deal with everything. Everything around me is spectacular. As time has passed I've felt more energy, more strength and more desire, and right now I have more desire than ever to keep playing."
