Gakpo scored twice and assisted once in the Netherlands' 5-1 win over Sweden, earning the FIFA Man of the Match award in the process. BBC Sport reports any deal would cost interested clubs upwards of £60 million. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Tottenham's interest, though Liverpool have not yet given a green light to an exit.
De Zerbi is understood to want a prominent role for Gakpo in his attack. Tottenham are prepared to offer a contract until 2031 and to make him a key figure rather than a squad option — a significant factor given the forward's own comments after the Sweden game, in which he cited the "freedom" he enjoys with the Netherlands over what he experienced at Liverpool under Arne Slot last season.
Liverpool's calculation is complicated by their own additions. Victor Muñoz has been signed to compete on the left flank, and youngster Rio Ngumoha adds further competition. Gakpo, who managed nine goals and six assists in 52 appearances for Liverpool last season, is reportedly questioning whether he can retain the prominence he wants at Anfield.
Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 for a fee between £35 million and £45 million. A sale at £60 million or above would represent a profit at a moment when his value is clearly peaking on the international stage.
Tottenham are also in pursuit of Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United and Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United. Whether Gakpo becomes the priority or sits alongside those targets depends on how quickly the Tonali impasse is resolved and how seriously Liverpool's hierarchy considers cashing in.
