The AC Milan midfielder was one of the standout performers as the Azzurrini opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Serbia, and he sat down with FIGC media afterwards to reflect on his career so far.
Born in 2007, the 18-year-old explained that football has been part of his life since infancy.
"My passion was born when I was just four or five months old, I was already going to watch my brother play on the pitches."
Sala was referring to his older brother Alessandro, born in 2001.
"From there it became a unique and immense love," he added.
The teenager also outlined the path that brought him to Milan.
"I started playing at Cimiano aged four, then the following year I moved to Milan. And from there I never left."
He named the players who have shaped his approach to the game.
"I'm inspired by Andres Iniesta. In club football I look at Luka Modric, and with the national team, Sandro Tonali."
Sala is well aware that not every young player gets the chance to represent his country, even at youth level, and he described the feeling in strong terms.
"For me it's an indescribable emotion. It's an honour to be able to fulfil my dream by representing my country."
Asked about his targets for the tournament, the midfielder set his sights firmly on silverware for the group.
"My goals are many, but at team level, I want to try to win this European Championship. Personally, to improve day by day."
Italy's opening win over Serbia has given the Azzurrini a strong platform in the competition, and Sala's performance suggested he could play a leading role as the tournament progresses.
His rise through Milan's academy, beginning with that move from Cimiano at the age of five, has now brought him to the international stage, and this summer represents his biggest tournament yet.
