Moyes: Could Everton sign Liverpool great Salah...?

Mohamed Salah has one unlikely admirer of his Liverpool departure: Everton manager David Moyes, who says he's "glad to see the back of" the Egyptian forward.

Moyes even laughed off suggestions the Toffees might make a move for their out-of-contract rival this summer.

Salah left Liverpool at the end of last season following a decorated spell at Anfield that brought two Premier League titles, the 2019 Champions League, a Club World Cup, the FA Cup and two League Cups. The Egypt captain, who scored nine times against Everton during his time as a Liverpool player, is preparing to face Argentina in a World Cup quarter-final on Tuesday having enjoyed a strong tournament so far, including a Man of the Match display against New Zealand that helped Egypt secure their first-ever World Cup victory.

Speaking to Egyptian broadcaster ON Sport, the Everton boss made clear his admiration for Salah despite the rivalry between the two clubs.

"I am not a specialist on Mo Salah because my team is Everton and we are fierce competitors," Moyes said. "But I think all Evertonians were glad to see the back of Mo because he has been so good over the years. He's been a great goalscorer, a good player and he has been enjoyed by the Liverpool supporters.

"So I think we are all glad to see that Mo is leaving Liverpool. I am sure it won't be the end for him. But the performances during his career at Liverpool have been exceptional."

Asked about the prospect of Salah moving to Everton instead, Moyes ruled it out immediately.

"No, no. Not possible. The rivalry is too big. Mohamed Salah's meaning to Liverpool is too big, so that would be impossible."

Salah's exit came despite having signed a contract extension in April 2025 that would have kept him at Anfield until 2027, with his departure announced back in March.

He leaves Liverpool as the club's all-time top foreign goalscorer and the Premier League's leading African scorer, closing the book on a spell that transformed him into one of the most decorated players in the club's history.

Salah's next club remains unclear, with the 34-year-old yet to announce his next destination since leaving Anfield as a free agent.
