José Mourinho wants Real Madrid to recruit a new central midfielder as he looks to address weaknesses in his squad, with Arsenal’s Martín Zubimendi emerging as a reported candidate.

According to journalist Joaquín Maroto of AS, the Portuguese coach intends to raise the issue with the club’s hierarchy as Madrid seek greater control and leadership in the middle of the pitch.

“It is Mourinho who is going to ask for the signing of a midfielder; he is already discussing it within the club,” Maroto reported.

The 27-year-old Zubimendi is said to fit the profile Madrid are seeking, although his current situation at Arsenal could complicate any potential move. The Spain international joined the Gunners from Real Sociedad and has faced increased competition for a place in Mikel Arteta’s midfield.

Maroto identified Zubimendi as a more realistic option than Adam Wharton, whose departure from Crystal Palace would be difficult to arrange.

“Zubimendi is the only midfield signing who fits Real Madrid at the moment, because Adam Wharton cannot come,” the journalist said.

Zubimendi’s reduced playing time has prompted speculation over his future, but Arteta has indicated that the midfielder remains part of his plans.

The Arsenal manager has stressed that the Spaniard will receive opportunities to demonstrate his quality when selected.

“He is going to play matches and get minutes, and when he comes onto the pitch, he must show how good he is. That is all. He has done it with the national team. Martín has also been exceptional,” Arteta said.

The Gunners boss added that the best response would be for his players to take advantage of their opportunities, rather than allow questions about selection to dominate the discussion.

For Madrid, the reported interest reflects Mourinho’s desire to improve a midfield that he believes needs additional authority. However, there is no confirmation that the Spanish club have made an offer for Zubimendi, and Arsenal have given no indication that they are prepared to sell.

Any potential deal would therefore depend on Madrid’s intentions, Arsenal’s position and the player’s own willingness to consider a move.

For now, Zubimendi remains an Arsenal player, with the transfer speculation resting on reports of Mourinho’s preference rather than a confirmed negotiation.
