Alexander-Arnold’s move to Spain was one of the biggest stories of the summer, but life at the Bernabeu has not been entirely smooth.
While the England international has produced moments of class in attack, Madrid’s wider struggles have added pressure to the campaign.
Former Real Madrid and Liverpool striker Owen, speaking to Football Presse, said: “New surrounding for Trent in Madrid and it’s been an up and down season for him.
“He has been involved in some special goals Madrid have scored this season, but has also been injured and in and out of the side.”
Owen believes the standards at Real Madrid mean individual performances are always judged alongside silverware, and that has complicated the verdict on Alexander-Arnold’s debut year.
He added: “For Madrid, you have to look to win trophies, and currently being out of the cups and behind in the League it looks like they may not win anything.”
That pressure has reportedly stretched beyond the squad, with scrutiny growing around the coaching setup.
Owen said: “With Alonso already gone and also Arbeloa now under pressure, it has been a very mixed season for Trent in Madrid.”
Alexander-Arnold arrived in Spain with huge expectations after years as one of the Premier League’s most creative full-backs.
Even in a turbulent campaign, flashes of his quality have remained clear. But at Real Madrid, success is usually measured in medals, meaning next season could be crucial for both the defender and the club.
