Manchester United have entered the race for Julián Álvarez, making direct contact with the Atlético Madrid striker's representatives as the transfer saga surrounding the Argentina international reaches a new level of intensity.

According to Diario AS journalist Marcos Duran, Manchester United held discussions with Álvarez's agent after monitoring the 26-year-old's situation closely. The club are understood to have funds available following their Champions League qualification and believe his record — 36 goals in 103 appearances at Manchester City before moving to Atletico Madrid — makes him a natural fit for what Michael Carrick is building at Old Trafford.

Álvarez lit the fuse himself during Argentina's World Cup campaign when he told ESPN he wanted out.

"The best thing for me is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream," he said. "I don't want to hide or act like I don't want to be clear. I try to be honest.

"I spoke to Atlético people and I think the best for everyone involved is for me to leave."

That statement sent shockwaves through the club. Atlético rejected a €150 million offer from Real Madrid and a separate approach from Barcelona, with CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín publicly filing a FIFA complaint against Barcelona for alleged tapping up. The club have made clear they will not sell to either Spanish rival.

United's involvement changes the dynamic. They represent a route out that does not involve selling to a LaLiga competitor, which could make them a more palatable destination for Atlético if the club eventually concludes that holding Álvarez against his will is not a viable position.

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked. But United's direct contact with his agent marks a significant escalation, and the striker's own willingness to move means the window of opportunity is real.

Whether United can meet Atlético's valuation is the central question. The Spanish club have shown no appetite to negotiate at below a premium fee. For Álvarez, the priority is movement. The destination, at this point, matters less than an exit.
