Claudio Echeverri says staying at Benfica beyond his current loan would be welcome, with the Manchester City midfielder keen to follow the club’s successful Argentine tradition.

The 20-year-old joined Benfica on a season-long loan after struggling to establish himself during previous spells at Bayer Leverkusen and Girona. His time in Portugal has so far brought limited league minutes, but the attacking midfielder has spoken positively about his new surroundings and the possibility of remaining beyond the current arrangement.

Speaking to Mais Futebol, Echeverri said he was happy at Benfica and hoped to build on the history of Argentine players who have succeeded at the Lisbon club.

“In Europe, Benfica is one of the best clubs for welcoming Argentines,” he said.

“Many great Argentine players have come through here. I hope that Prestianni and I can follow in the footsteps of those Argentines who found success here. I’m very happy to be here.”

Asked whether he could see himself staying longer, Echeverri made clear that he was open to the possibility while stressing that his immediate focus remained on the present.

“Yes, of course (he could stay). But one step at a time—we’ll see what happens. Still, it would be wonderful.”

The midfielder has made four appearances for Benfica this season, registering two assists, although he has yet to start a league match. He has therefore had limited opportunities to demonstrate his potential, with regular playing time likely to be important for his development.

Echeverri’s latest comments came after Benfica’s 4-1 Europa League victory over Omonia, in which he provided an assist. He also spoke about the importance of the collective result after learning that a goal he thought he had scored had been credited as an own goal.

“I’ve just realized that the goal was credited to the defender, not me,” he said. “But hey, no problem. Honestly, I’m just really happy for the team. Three wins in three matches… hopefully, we can keep this going.”

Benfica have a strong record of giving Argentine players a platform, and Echeverri has already spoken about the influence of former and current players in his decision to join. His compatriot Gianluca Prestianni is also at the club, giving the pair an opportunity to build on their shared background.

Manchester City will retain an interest in Echeverri’s development as he looks for a consistent role in senior football. His previous loan spells did not produce the breakthrough he had hoped for, making his time in Portugal an important stage in his career.

For now, Echeverri has not suggested that a longer stay is agreed or that negotiations are under way. His position is simpler: he is enjoying Benfica, wants to make the most of the opportunity and would welcome the chance to remain if the circumstances allow.
