Mac Allister says double pivot is his best position amid Liverpool uncertainty

Alexis Mac Allister has said that playing as part of a double defensive midfield pivot is the position that suits him best, even as his long-term future at Liverpool remains unresolved with two years left on his contract and no new deal yet offered.

The Argentina midfielder is at the World Cup in North America preparing for a round of 32 clash against Cape Verde, having had a difficult season at Liverpool that ended with the sacking of Arne Slot and the appointment of Andoni Iraola as head coach.

Real Madrid had been considered potential suitors, but the situation has shifted following José Mourinho's arrival as manager at the Bernabéu earlier this month. The Spanish club have signed Bernardo Silva on a free transfer from Manchester City and are exploring a big-money move for Chelsea's Enzo Fernández, reducing the likelihood of a pursuit for Mac Allister.

Speaking to ESPN's Ball Knowledge, Mac Allister reflected on his evolution as a player since moving to England.

"When I was young I used to play as a 10," he said. "In Argentina I would play a lot in maybe a diamond, so 4-3-1-2.

"I used to play as 10. Then when I came to England, playing at 10 was a little harder for me, so I moved a little bit deeper to play as an eight.

"I like to do a bit of everything and try to help the team wherever I can. I like to be close to the ball, and I feel like to be close to the ball. Maybe the position as a double six is my best position. But I can play everywhere."

Mac Allister named Barcelona's Pedri and Paris Saint-Germain pair Vitinha and Joao Neves as his favourite midfielders to watch at present.

"I would say Pedri," he said. "He's in a really good level and he's showing the whole world how to play football. Then you have Vitinha and Joao Neves as well. We played against them and they are really good and not just on the ball, but physically off the ball they are very smart. I really like them."

Mac Allister featured in all but two of Liverpool's matches last season, playing across various midfield roles away from the number six position he had settled into alongside Ryan Gravenberch in the previous campaign. His contract situation — and the club's failure to open new deal discussions — remains the most pressing question surrounding his future as the summer develops.
