Andoni Iraola’s side moved into fourth place in the Premier League after a performance built on aggressive pressing, effective transitions and disciplined defending. Brighton had opportunities to make the contest more competitive but were unable to recover from conceding twice in the opening 21 minutes.
The visitors threatened first when Yasin Ayari sent a promising opportunity over the crossbar. Liverpool responded by increasing the pressure, and Florian Wirtz’s effort was diverted into the net by Gross in the 17th minute.
Four minutes later, Alexander Isak doubled the advantage. Bradley Barcola won possession, beat his opponent and delivered into the penalty area, where the striker finished from close range.
Brighton continued to create openings before the interval. Ayari struck the post with a curling attempt, while Liverpool’s defenders worked hard to prevent further opportunities.
Iraola was particularly pleased with the way his team began the match, contrasting their approach with previous games in which they had conceded first and been forced to chase the result.
Speaking to Liverpool FC’s official website, the head coach said: “I think today the key was how we started. We needed a stronger start, be aggressive, recover the ball, win our duels, be dangerous in transitions.”
He also praised Isak’s finishing ability, explaining that the striker would score when his teammates supplied him with suitable opportunities.
Liverpool adopted a more compact defensive shape after the interval, restricting Brighton’s space and protecting their two-goal cushion. Ronald Araújo was among those who impressed, combining strong defensive work with an important contribution to the opening goal.
Iraola was delighted with the defender’s performance after leaving him out during previous matches.
“He has given a very, very good 90 minutes,” the Liverpool manager said.
Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler viewed the defeat as an opportunity missed, believing his team had done enough in spells to threaten a different outcome.
“It was a missed opportunity,” he said. “I think everyone felt that we could definitely take something away from this game. I think in the end we made two easy mistakes so they could score two goals.”
Hürzeler acknowledged that Liverpool defended their penalty area effectively, but insisted his players had continued trying to find a way back into the contest. He urged them to learn from the defensive errors rather than dwell on the result.
Liverpool had further opportunities to extend their lead but ultimately secured a valuable clean sheet. The victory strengthened their position in the top four and offered further evidence that Iraola’s team are finding greater consistency.
