Simone Lontani scored a late consolation for Parma, but Gennaro Gattuso’s side held on to move to 22 points from their opening eight matches and take the lead in the table.
Parma made a competitive start and created several opportunities in the first half. Daniel Romero and Touré both tested goalkeeper Christos Mandas, who produced important saves to keep the visitors out.
Lazio also threatened before the interval. Gustav Isaksen struck the crossbar with a header and later found the net, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside. The hosts struggled to find their rhythm initially but grew into the contest as the half progressed.
The breakthrough came five minutes after the restart. Kenneth Taylor found space to advance and finished with his left foot to put Lazio ahead. Eight minutes later, Nuno Tavares delivered a cross that Parma defender Diego Carlos diverted into his own net, doubling the home side’s advantage.
Parma reduced the deficit in stoppage time when Lontani’s cross-shot travelled beyond Mandas, but the goal came too late to prevent Lazio from taking all three points.
Gattuso praised his players’ mentality and warned against allowing the impressive start to distract them from the work still required.
“We’ll have time to enjoy these records when I retire and the players have left here. For now, we have to keep going. I’m proud to coach this team because of its mentality.”
The Lazio manager had recognised the danger of facing a Parma side expected to defend deep and attack quickly. He admitted that his team had been slow during the opening stages but felt their quality emerged as they increased the tempo.
“This was a trap game. What we did a week ago could easily have been undone today. Lazio’s history shows that after victories like these, we have sometimes been brought back down to earth. We knew how they would play, with a low block and quick forwards.”
Parma coach Alberto Gilardino was disappointed that his side had failed to turn a promising first half into a result. He believed his players created enough chances to take the lead but were punished by defensive lapses after the break.
“In the first half, we played well and created several opportunities. We conceded two goals too easily, and I didn’t like the way we switched off.”
Gilardino stressed that Parma needed to mature quickly, particularly when responding to setbacks during matches.
“After the first goal, you have to stay in the game. You cannot allow counter-attacks. Everything becomes difficult when you concede two goals like that.”
Lazio’s seventh win in eight league matches continued their outstanding start, while Parma suffered a third consecutive defeat.
