Álex Jiménez’s superb second-half strike looked set to give Fiorentina a valuable win at San Siro, but Inter scored twice in stoppage time to claim a dramatic 2-1 victory.

Marcus Thuram equalised in the 91st minute before Piotr Zieliński converted a penalty in the 98th.

“We played a good match, then went behind to a wonder goal,” Inter coach Cristian Chivu said. “I liked the attitude. I would have said the same even if it had finished 0-1. The mental side matters a lot, and today we did not panic or feel victims of injustice. That is credit to the players and this group. The substitutes also added something.”

Chivu praised Thuram’s leadership.

“I don’t know whether it is down to me or Zinedine Zidane. He is showing his leadership, and with Lautaro Martínez missing he is taking responsibility. During the international break, he had the chance to spend three weeks with me.

"Even with 90 minutes behind him, in the 100th minute he was getting into the box with devastating power. When he runs at you with that speed, there is always a risk he will score.”

Álex Jiménez struck in the 65th minute.

“We had good patterns of play, and against Inter you cannot make mistakes,” Fiorentina coach Paolo Vanoli said. “For 80 minutes we were in the game. We had two opportunities to make it 2-0. It hurts, but we have seen that this is the right path. I saw a great Fiorentina. This is the way to do something important.”

“There has to be a certain atmosphere around us at this moment. Inter are what they are, but my players put in a great performance, with a great attitude and personality. The disappointment comes because after Como, too, they deserved something important.”

Vanoli explained that his substitutions were intended to attack Inter Milan’s weaknesses rather than protect the lead.

“It was a change of mindset to hurt them. In that part of the pitch, Henrikh Mkhitaryan was struggling against Jiménez. I wanted Domilson Cordeiro dos Santos (Dodô) to push forward because Alessandro Bastoni was also moving into the full-back area. We have to be clear-headed and look at what we did. The players must stay calm.”

Chivu urged Inter not to settle after another comeback.

“We must never be satisfied,” he said. “Going behind several times in a row can create doubts, but we kept our heads and fought our way back. Even when energy was low, we did not give up.”

Vanoli also said Beto had to respond: “I need him and everyone. We have laid another important brick after Como and today, but the players must look ahead.”
