Antonio Conte will leave Napoli at the end of the season by mutual agreement, with Il Mattino reporting that the 56-year-old has already made his decision and informed president Aurelio De Laurentiis of his intentions a month ago.

Conte is understood to have voluntarily relinquished the final year of his contract, forgoing salary worth โ‚ฌ18m gross including his coaching staff, with the two parties agreeing to part on good terms and without any compensation payment. The clean break reflects the relationship both sides want to preserve after a title-winning spell that began in difficult circumstances.

He arrived in the summer of 2024 when Napoli had finished tenth and the club was in a state of institutional depression following the collapse of the title-winning squad. He rebuilt the side systematically, winning the Scudetto in 2024-25 and securing Champions League qualification again this season despite a more turbulent campaign.

Conte had already signalled his mindset publicly following Sunday's 3-0 win at Pisa, which confirmed Napoli's top-four finish with a round to spare.

"I arrived at Napoli during a moment of extreme difficulty. I had promised that in the moment my experience at Napoli was finished, I would leave behind a solid and ambitious group, capable of fighting and always causing problems for opponents. The president has known my thoughts for a month already. I will always be grateful to him for having been given the opportunity to coach a club like this."

Sky Italia and Corriere dello Sport both reported that only an extraordinary reversal would prevent the departure. De Laurentiis is expected to move quickly on a replacement, with Maurizio Sarri understood to be the president's preference. Enzo Maresca is also under consideration depending on whether his agreed arrangement with Manchester City materialises.

Conte's immediate future is likely to be the Italian national team job, which became available following Gennaro Gattuso's resignation after Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup. FIGC presidential elections are scheduled for June 22, after which the appointment of a new coach is expected to follow.
