“He has an injury of his thigh and is going to be out for a few weeks. Let’s see how many,” Alonso said ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie away to Liverpool.
“We don’t want to predict on that, but not ready for the next few games.”
Pedro has not featured since Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League win over Everton on 17 October. He also missed Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur after picking up the problem in training.
Alonso acknowledged the importance of the 25-year-old to his side, but said Chelsea would need to find solutions with the players available.
“He’s a key player. We’ll miss him. We have to be ready to deal with the injury, starting tomorrow with Liverpool,” the Spaniard said.
Asked whether Chelsea could cope without Pedro, Alonso replied: “Yeah, for sure. This is why you build a squad.”
“For sure, some players are important but this can happen.”
“We are starting tomorrow against Liverpool, a cup game. This is the situation. We are ready to fight for it and ready to prove that we can show the level.”
Pedro has been one of Chelsea’s most productive attackers this season, contributing five goals and three assists in the Premier League, according to the club’s pre-match update. His absence leaves Alonso with fewer options through the middle as Chelsea enter a demanding stretch of games.
Against Tottenham, Alonso used Morgan Rogers in a makeshift central-forward role. The manager will now have to consider alternatives for the Liverpool cup tie and the subsequent league meeting with Manchester United.
Chelsea have not given a precise return date, and Alonso was careful not to put a timeframe on the recovery beyond saying Pedro would miss the next few matches. The club will continue to assess the injury before determining when he can return to full training.
The immediate priority is to get through the coming fixtures without their key forward, while avoiding any rush that could prolong his absence.
